Bob Bradley Calls On The (Mostly) Domestic Troops

November 12, 2008

Bob Bradley named a preliminary training camp squad to convene in Colorado this week, made up on entirely MLS players (and two Norwegian league players since their season is also over).  This is not the final camp squad list, so it is expected that some of the Yanks in Europe will pop over as well for our next qualifier against Guatemala on the 19th.  The biggest sigh of relief comes at the sight of Kenny Cooper who everyone (including me) hopes will get a solid run out against Guatemala.  Let’s peek at the list:

GOALKEEPERS:

Brian Edwards (Toronto FC), Troy Perkins (Valerenga IF), Matt Pickens (out of contract)

DEFENDERS:

Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Sean Franklin (Los Angeles Galaxy), Cory Gibbs (Colorado Rapids), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Drew Moor (FC Dallas), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution)

MIDFIELDERS:

Colin Clark (Colorado Rapids), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Nick LaBrocca (Colorado Rapids), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids)

FORWARDS:

Davy Arnaud (Kansas City Wizards), Chad Barrett (Toronto FC), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas)

My Thoughts: The first thing worth noting is that the majority of these domestic players will not even see the bench on the final Guatemala roster.  So once we get past that, who are the highlights of this list? For my money, the only LOCKS to make the roster are Kenny Cooper and Sacha Kljestan.  In the next tier of players who I think have a strong shot but aren’t LOCKS are Jonathan Bornstein, Corey Gibbs, Pablo Mastroeni, and Brian Ching.  You could also make an argument for Goodson and Parkhurst, especially since we don’t NEED to win on the 19th.  Goodson has looked quite strong in Norway, having gotten on the scoresheet from the CB spot a number of times, and Parkhust is a US Soccer favorite even though the chips are stacked somewhat against him.

What do you think of the roster? Agree with me? Disagree? LET’S HEAR IT.

  1. If pablo Mastroeni and Brian Ching make this roster Bob Bradley should be FIRED!!! these guys are not going to be playing in 2010 so they should not be in camp. If Bob thinks they will be playing or ahve a chance to play in 2010 then he should be FIRED!Gibbs and Parkhurst are good players, I can see them hanging around for a game, I am really excited to see Kenny in a USMNT jersey.
