The Woes of Dempsey and Other Saturday Action

September 20, 2008

English Premier League

In what has surely been a nightmare season so far for the Texan, Dempsey was left on the bench for Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Blackburn this morning.  Matt Derbyshire made the difference in the 84th minute after coming on for Treacy, shooting low and hard past Mark Schwarzer.  Fulham had the host of chances, but couldn’t find the net and it looked like the Cottagers could’ve used Dempsey’s pace as Gera looked invisible for the latter half of the match.

My Thoughts: Knowing Clint, he can’t be happy about being just a substitute, especially one who can’t get on the field.  If he continues to struggle for even scrap minutes, his position on the right wing for the USMNT could very well be under threat.  It could even provide a place for Adu to come in and shine, hell, that is IF Adu can start seeing more minutes himself!

Michael Bradley’s debut was spoiled by a 10th minute Hertha Berlin goal, as the young American came immediately into the starting lineup for his new side.  Bradley played a strong 65 minutes before being replaced, getting deep into the box on a number of occassions and having a few shots on goal.  He tackled well in the second half, showing some of the grit that has grown to define his game at the International level.  A good debut for the young American, but M’gladbach will be disappointed to not get a point after going close numerous times.

Eddie Johnson also played today for Cardiff, but I refuse to report on him until he scores a goal.  He needs to earn the attention.

Tomorrow has most of the action, with hopefully more minutes for Jozy.  Check back as games happen for video clips and straight talk!
