Jozy Altidore Debuts For Villarreal!

September 15, 2008

Let’s kick this recap off right, with a video! Above you can check out the highlights from Jozy’s 45 minutes yesterday versus Deportivo La Coruna.  So what do we think?

My Thoughts: For a debut, Jozy certainly impressed.  He had a few sublime moments on the ball, beating defenders down the wing and setting up teammates for what could have been tap-ins.  His ability to use his body is amazing, especially for an 18 year old, and it’ll only get better as he continues to hone his skills.  Pretty much every Spanish media outlet was impressed with Altidore. Marca.com said:

“The American forward came on in the second half and provided depth.  His physical superiority over Deportivo’s defensive line was insulting.”

Insulting, eh? Awesome. At this point, Bob Bradley has to call in Altidore, right?  Altidore is playing competitive soccer in La Liga, so he has to be ready for international duty…RIGHT?  It’s hard to make a case for Altidore’s exclusion, especially when EJ is called up time after time.  I think Bob Bradley has to take notice at this point, and I expect we’ll see Altidore in the next few Qualifiers.  I’m not convinced we’ll see Freddy, but I think Altidore is making a really strong case for a spot.  Could Altidore even be ready for a starting role?

However, it’s probably good to remember that this is Altidore’s first game.  As much as we want to heap expectation and praise on the boy, we shouldn’t get too riled up.  Let’s keep an eye on him over the next few matches and hope he stays consistent and remains a strong attacking force.

In other Sunday news, Michael Bradley made the bench but didn’t play for ‘Gladbach as they were thrashed 5-1 by Cherundolo’s Hannover (Neither Dolo or Zizzo played).  Looks like we’ll have to wait another week for Mikey’s debut, but I’m sure he will have a strong shot at starting for the Bundesliga side.
